If your radiator is not heating up properly, several possible issues could be causing the problem:

Air Trapped in the System – If only the top part of the radiator is cold, there may be air trapped inside.

Solution: Bleed the radiator to release the air. This is how you bleed your radiator:

Bleeding a radiator is a simple process that helps release trapped air, allowing hot water to circulate properly. Follow these steps:

What You’ll Need:

  • A radiator key (or a flathead screwdriver for modern valves)
  • A cloth or small bowl (to catch any drips)
  • Protective gloves (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Turn Off the Heating – Ensure your central heating system is switched off and the radiators have cooled down to avoid burns.
  2. Locate the Bleed Valve – Find the small square or slotted valve on the top corner of the radiator.
  3. Insert the Radiator Key – Place the key (or screwdriver) into the valve.
  4. Turn the Valve Slowly – Turn it counterclockwise (about a quarter to half a turn). You will hear a hissing sound as air escapes.
  5. Wait for Water to Drip – Once water starts dripping steadily, the air is fully released. Quickly turn the valve clockwise to close it.
  6. Check Boiler Pressure (Combi and System Boilers) – If multiple radiators were bled, check your boiler pressure. If it’s too low, you may need to repressurize the system (follow your boiler manual for instructions).
  7. Turn the Heating Back On – Switch the heating back on and check if the radiator is now warming up properly.

Sludge Build-Up – If the radiator is cold at the bottom, sludge or debris could be blocking the system. Solution: A power flush or chemical cleaning may be needed. Installation of a magnetic filter while help prevent build up.

Faulty Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) – If the radiator stays cold, the TRV may be stuck or faulty. Solution: Try adjusting or replacing the valve. Usually done by a professional.

Radiator Valve Closed – If the radiator isn't heating at all, the valve may be closed. Solution: Ensure both the inlet and outlet valves are open.

Boiler or Central Heating Issues – If multiple radiators are not heating, the system may need balancing. There may also be an issue with the boiler. Solution: Check the boiler if necessary or contact us!
